Govt poised to withdraw Rs7.41 per unit electricity relief package

ISLAMABAD: The federal government’s electricity relief package, which provided a Rs7.41 per unit reduction in power bills over three months, is set to end in July, with no extension planned, ARY News reported.

Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the relief package, introduced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in April 2025 to alleviate the financial burden on consumers, will not continue beyond July, meaning bills issued in August will no longer include the discounted rates.

Announced on April 4, the package was hailed by the Prime Minister as a fulfillment of PML-N’s manifesto promises. “I bring good news on Eid regarding Pakistan’s economic progress,” PM Shehbaz said at the time, also revealing a separate Rs7.59 per unit reduction for industrial consumers.

The relief package featured several components:

  • Quarterly Adjustments: Rs1.90 per unit (April–June) and Rs1.55 per unit (May–July)

  • Petroleum Price Adjustments: Rs1.71 per unit

  • Fuel Price Adjustments: Rs0.90 per unit

The final Rs1.55 per unit discount will appear in this month’s bills. Meanwhile, sources suggest that June’s Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA), to be reflected in July billing, may be negative, offering some additional relief.

Separately, NEPRA has already conducted a hearing on a proposed Rs0.10 per unit hike in May’s FCA.
