KARACHI

The Sindh government has declared July 5 and 6 (Saturday and Sunday) as public holidays across the province in connection with Ashura, marking the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram, 1447 A.H.

An official notification issued on July 1 by the Services, General Administration & Coordination Department confirmed the decision. The holidays will apply to all government offices, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under Sindh’s administrative control. However, departments providing essential services will remain functional as usual.

The announcement was made by Sindh’s Chief Secretary, Asif Hyder Shah, who directed all relevant departments to ensure implementation of the holiday schedule.

Ashura holds deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide as it commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the historic Battle of Karbala.

Security arrangements across Sindh are expected to be tight, with processions and religious gatherings planned over the two days. Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace, observe the days with respect and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
