Karachi residents in several districts should prepare for water shortages starting Thursday. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) confirmed that a critical maintenance operation at the Dhabeji Pumping Station will force a partial shutdown of the city’s primary supply line.

The work centers on a 72-inch diameter pipeline that has developed multiple leaks. Engineers expect the repairs to take at least 24 hours to complete, followed by a phased restoration process that could leave taps dry for up to two days in some areas.

Areas slated for the most significant disruptions include Clifton, Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Saddar, and parts of District South. Residents in District East—specifically PECHS and surrounding blocks—will also likely see a drop in water pressure as the system recalibrates.

“We have to address these leaks now, or we risk a total collapse of the main conduit,” a senior KWSC official told local reporters Wednesday. He acknowledged the timing is difficult but insisted that deferred maintenance is no longer an option.

The city’s aging infrastructure remains the primary culprit. Much of Karachi’s water network relies on decades-old pipelines that struggle to handle the high-pressure demand of a swelling population. While the KWSC promised to deploy water tankers to critical facilities like hospitals, individual households are expected to rely on their private reserves.

For neighborhoods already dealing with intermittent supply, the next 48 hours will be particularly challenging. The utility has advised citizens to store water immediately and use available supplies sparingly until the system returns to full capacity.

Restoration won’t be instantaneous. Once the valves reopen, the system requires time to build up the necessary pressure to reach the tail-end areas of the distribution network.

If the repair teams hit a snag, the outage could extend into the weekend. For now, the city’s water board is holding to its 24-hour repair window—a timeline that will be tested the moment the water stops flowing.
