Islamabad— Recently reinstated members of the National and Provincial Assemblies will receive their basic salaries for the duration of their suspension. However, they will not be entitled to travel allowances (T.A/D.A) or other perks.
According to sources, a total of 77 lawmakers were suspended on May 13, 2024 — including 22 from the National Assembly, of whom 19 were women and 3 were minority representatives. So far, 19 of these MNAs have been reinstated, while notifications for the remaining three are still pending.
As per the National Assembly Secretariat, reinstated members will receive a basic monthly salary of PKR 150,000 each from May 13 to December 31, 2024. From January 1, 2025, until the Supreme Court’s verdict, salaries will be paid according to the new pay scale. The final decision on this matter will be taken by the Finance Committee of the National Assembly, chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, who is currently abroad.
Fifty-five reinstated MPAs on reserved seats in provincial assemblies will also receive their basic salaries during their suspension in accordance with the rules of their respective assemblies.
On July 2, the Election Commission of Pakistan reinstated 74 out of 77 suspended lawmakers — 19 from the National Assembly, 27 from Punjab, 25 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 3 from Sindh.
The ECP decision followed a landmark ruling by a 10-member Supreme Court constitutional bench, which overturned an earlier 13-member bench decision issued on July 12, 2024. The earlier ruling had declared PTI eligible for reserved seats.
In March 2024, the ECP had issued notifications for the allocation of reserved seats for women and minorities, which were claimed by the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). However, the ECP rejected SIC’s claim, citing the lack of a formal merger with PTI, and distributed those seats among other political parties.
