Vitamin B12 Deficiency Can Lead to Serious Health Problems, Experts Warn

Vitamin B12 is a key nutrient that helps in making red blood cells, keeping the nervous system healthy, and supporting DNA production. A new awareness campaign by health experts stresses the importance of getting enough of this vitamin through diet or supplements.

Doctors say a lack of vitamin B12 can cause anaemia, fatigue, weakness, and serious nerve-related issues like tingling in hands and feet, memory loss, and even mood disorders. In severe cases, it may lead to megaloblastic anaemia and problems with walking or coordination.

Vitamin B12 is mostly found in animal-based foods like red meat, fish, eggs, poultry, and dairy. Some cereals and plant-based milks are also fortified with it. Experts suggest that vegetarians and vegans may need to take supplements to meet their daily needs.

Having enough vitamin B12 not only keeps energy levels steady but may also help protect the heart and support brain health. Treatment for deficiency usually includes supplements or injections, depending on how low the levels are.

Doctors advise getting regular check-ups and consulting a professional before starting any supplements.
