Adding Extra Salt to Food Linked to Depression

Chinese scientists have warned that frequently adding extra salt to food may significantly increase the risk of depression.

‎In a study published in the scientific journal Nutritional Neuroscience, Chinese researchers reviewed the dietary habits of more than 15,000 adults.

‎The research found that individuals who consumed the highest amounts of added salt were 26 percent more likely to suffer from depression.

‎Scientists did not clearly explain why salt may have this effect. However, they stated that excessive salt intake could overstimulate the biological system that regulates the body’s stress response, potentially increasing the production of stress hormones.

‎Researchers also pointed out that high salt consumption may cause inflammation in the body, which can affect areas of the brain responsible for regulating emotional balance and mood.

‎In the study, scientists from Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital wrote that a significant and positive association was observed between regularly adding extra salt to meals and the risk of depression.
