AstraZeneca has pulled the plug on a late-stage trial for volrustomig, a drug intended to treat non-small cell lung cancer. The company confirmed on Wednesday that an independent data monitoring committee found the treatment unlikely to meet its primary goal of improving patient outcomes compared to current standards.

This marks a significant blow to the pharmaceutical giant’s oncology pipeline. Volrustomig, a bispecific antibody, was designed to hit two targets simultaneously—PD-1 and CTLA-4—aiming to supercharge the immune system’s ability to hunt down cancer cells.

The study, dubbed eVOLVE-Lung02, was testing the drug in patients who had already seen their cancer progress after initial chemotherapy and immunotherapy. AstraZeneca had hoped for a breakthrough in a crowded market, but the interim analysis showed the drug simply didn’t clear the bar.

“While we are disappointed that this trial did not reach its primary endpoint, the data provides essential insights into the complexity of treating advanced lung cancer,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. They added that the focus now shifts to winding down the study and analyzing the data to inform future research.

The failure hits at a sensitive time for AstraZeneca. Investors have been closely watching the company’s push to diversify its cancer portfolio beyond its blockbuster drug, Tagrisso. Volrustomig was intended to be a cornerstone of that expansion, positioning the company to compete with other major players fighting for dominance in the immuno-oncology space.

For patients, the news is a setback. Many in the trial had few remaining treatment options, and the failure leaves a void in the development of dual-target therapies.

AstraZeneca’s stock saw a marginal dip following the announcement, reflecting broader market anxiety over the success rate of complex, high-stakes clinical trials. The company now faces the task of recalibrating its lung cancer strategy, with analysts waiting to see if other ongoing trials in their pipeline can recover the lost momentum.

The company will present the full findings at an upcoming medical conference, but for now, the development of volrustomig in this specific setting is over.
