Azerbaijan’s First Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of the General Staff, Colonel General Karim Valiyev, has awarded the Patriotic War Medal to Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev. The honour recognises the COAS’s role in strengthening bilateral military cooperation, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Wednesday.
The ceremony took place at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, where the Azerbaijani military delegation met the COAS to discuss matters of mutual interest, with particular focus on the regional and global security landscape.
Field Marshal Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s fraternal ties with Azerbaijan and reiterated the country’s commitment to expanding bilateral relations. He also congratulated Gen Valiyev on the successful peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Gen Valiyev commended the professionalism of the Pakistan Armed Forces and their success during Marka-e-Haq, the period of heightened tensions with India following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, culminating in Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos on May 10.
The Azerbaijani delegation extended greetings ahead of Pakistan’s Independence Day and victory celebrations. Field Marshal Munir, in turn, thanked Azerbaijan’s leadership and people for their solidarity during Marka-e-Haq, as well as for sending a contingent to participate in the national celebrations.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening defence cooperation and working together for regional peace and stability.
