BAJAUR — A roadside bomb struck a vehicle near a dam construction site in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district on Tuesday, killing two people and injuring several others.

The explosion targeted a truck transporting construction materials to the project site, according to local police. The force of the blast left the vehicle mangled and sent a plume of black smoke over the rugged terrain, bringing work at the site to an immediate halt.

Rescue teams pulled two bodies from the wreckage shortly after the blast. Three others, suffering from shrapnel wounds and blast-related trauma, were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Khar. Doctors there describe the condition of two survivors as critical.

Police cordoned off the area within minutes, launching a search operation to track down those responsible. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, though the region has seen a resurgence in militant activity targeting infrastructure projects and security personnel.

The Bajaur district, which borders Afghanistan, remains a flashpoint for security challenges. Projects like the dam are intended to improve local water management and irrigation, but they have increasingly become targets for insurgents looking to disrupt state-led development in the tribal districts.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of their families. Security officials are currently reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses from nearby villages to piece together the sequence of events.

With the investigation in its early stages, police say they are keeping all leads open, including the possibility of a remotely detonated device. For the residents of Bajaur, the explosion is a grim reminder of the volatility that continues to shadow the region’s efforts at economic stability.
