Two dazzling comets, C/2025 A4 (Lemmon) and C/2025 R2 (SWAN), are heading toward their closest encounter with Earth this Thursday, Oct. 24. Astronomy fans around the globe are gearing up to witness this rare celestial event, as both comets appear in the night sky at nearly the same time a sight that doesn’t happen often.
To make the experience even more special, astronomer Gianluca Masi and his Virtual Telescope Project will host a live online observation of the event. The livestream begins at 1:30 p.m. EDT (1730 GMT), giving viewers a chance to see the comets’ glowing tails and their movement through space, all in real time.
The live broadcast was initially scheduled for earlier this week, but unfavorable weather conditions forced a short delay. With clearer skies now expected, the Oct. 24 stream promises an excellent view of both comets at their peak visibility.
According to experts, comet Lemmon and comet SWAN can also be spotted using telescopes or even strong binoculars. For stargazers, it’s a perfect opportunity to catch two bright visitors from the outer solar system sharing the same stretch of sky a truly cosmic double feature.
