SYDNEY: Australian cricket star David Warner has confirmed that opener Matt Renshaw will be the long-term replacement for Usman Khawaja in the Test side, following Khawaja’s recent injury concerns.
Khawaja, 38, was sidelined during the second Ashes Test at the Gabba due to a back spasm, forcing Australia to reshuffle their batting order. Travis Head moved up the order, while debutant Jake Weatherald also got an opportunity.
Ahead of the Big Bash League (BBL) 15, Warner spoke about Khawaja’s future in the squad, particularly regarding the upcoming third Ashes Test in Adelaide starting 17 December.
Warner expressed confidence that Khawaja will return to the opening slot once fit, suggesting that Travis Head batting lower down the order could actually increase the challenge for England bowlers.
“I think Uzzy (Khawaja) comes back in, slides to the top, and Trav (Head) goes down,” Warner told reporters. “That’s probably a worse result for England, Travis Head going back down the order,” he added.
Warner’s remarks indicate that while Renshaw is the planned long-term solution, Khawaja’s experience and ability make him a key part of Australia’s Test setup when fully fit.
