Erdogan Says Turkey Working to Revive Russia-Ukraine Talks in Meeting With NATO Chief

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that Turkey is continuing efforts to revive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, as the two sides discussed the war, regional tensions, and preparations for the next NATO summit during talks in Ankara. Türkiye’s Communications Directorate said Erdogan stressed the need for closer allied solidarity amid an increasingly unstable regional environment.

According to the Turkish readout, Erdogan said Ankara was pressing ahead with diplomatic efforts to restart negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. The meeting with Rutte also covered broader regional and global developments, alongside NATO’s agenda and summit preparations.

Turkey has long tried to position itself as a possible mediator in the war, balancing support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity with continued communication channels with Russia. That role has kept Ankara involved in discussions on ceasefire options, Black Sea security, and possible peace initiatives.

The remarks come at a time when diplomatic momentum around the war remains fragile. Recent reports say Ukraine has been seeking fresh ways to revive stalled peace efforts, including the possibility of high-level talks hosted by third countries such as Turkey.
