An alarming revelation has emerged as expired blood culture vials were discovered at Jinnah Hospital.
Following patient complaints, the hospital administration inspected the laboratory and recovered expired vials from the pathology lab. Vials that had originally expired in 2022 were found with stickers showing an expiry date of 2025. Despite being expired according to the 2025 date as well, the vials were still administered to patients.
According to sources, expired blood culture vials continued to be used at Jinnah Hospital for the past three years. The hospital’s laboratory conducts more than 100 blood culture tests daily.
Principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College, Professor Tayabba Waseem, stated that legal action will be taken against those responsible for providing expired vials. She confirmed that the use of expired vials led to incorrect diagnoses for patients.
