A dangerously high flood has hit Head Panjnad as water levels in the Chenab River surged to an extremely critical point, inundating several villages in Uch Sharif and surrounding areas. Residents, cut off by floodwaters, have resorted to makeshift boats to move their belongings and livestock to safer ground.
According to local sources, floodwaters have submerged Mouza Gumani, Bakhtiari, and Balla Jhullan, among other villages. Despite repeated warnings, many residents have chosen to remain in their settlements, raising concerns for their safety.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from Pakistan Army and Rescue 1122 working tirelessly to evacuate stranded families. However, authorities admit that moving people, goods, and animals out of the affected areas has become increasingly difficult due to the strong currents.
Tragedy struck in Mouza Bakhtiari, where 30-year-old Muhammad Akhtar drowned while trying to move his livestock. Rescue workers recovered his body after several hours of effort.
In another incident near Chishtian, a 38-year-old man identified as Muhammad Hussain was swept away by floodwaters. He had been traveling on an inflated tire tube toward a nearby village when the powerful current caused him to lose balance. Rescue officials are still searching for his body.
The Flood Control Room confirmed that the massive flood wave from Head Panjnad is merging into the Indus River at Kot Mithan, creating a high-level flood downstream. At Kot Mithan, water flow has reached nearly 700,000 cusecs.
Floodwaters in the Indus River have severely impacted the katcha (riverine) belt, where more than 111,000 people have already been displaced and thousands of acres of standing crops destroyed. Authorities have stated that residents will not be allowed to return home until water levels drop to safe limits.
