Tropical Storm Andrea has formed in the central Atlantic Ocean, becoming the first named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced Tuesday, June 24.
The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, is located about 1,200 miles west of the Azores and is moving east northeast at 17 mph. Forecasters say Andrea is expected to be short-lived and will likely dissipate by the evening of Wednesday, June 25, without making landfall.
Andrea marks the start of what is expected to be an active hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted a 60% chance of an above-normal season, with 13 to 19 named storms. Of these, six to ten may become hurricanes, and three to five could reach “major” hurricane status (Category 3 or higher).
Meanwhile, the Eastern Pacific hurricane season, which also began on June 1, has already seen four named storms. A fifth, possibly to be named “Flossie,” may form within the next week as a low-pressure system develops off Central America’s coast. The NHC gives it a 70% chance of becoming a tropical storm by the weekend.
