Gul Plaza Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 26, Dozens Missing as Massive Fire Destroys 1,200 Shops

A devastating fire and partial building collapse at Gul Plaza, one of the city’s busiest commercial centers, has left the area in mourning. According to multiple reports, the death toll from the tragic incident has risen from 18 to at least 26, while between 18 and 22 people sustained injuries. Rescue officials confirmed that 50 to 70 individuals are still missing; some reports place the number of missing persons at around 65, with search and rescue operations continuing despite hazardous conditions.

The blaze completely destroyed nearly 1,200 shops dealing in household goods, electronics, clothing, toys, perfumes, and other merchandise. A large portion of the plaza has collapsed due to the intensity of the fire, causing massive financial losses estimated to run into billions of rupees.

Rescue authorities stated that the fire was brought under control after 24 to 36 hours, by late Sunday or early Monday morning. However, the structure remains unstable, posing a serious risk of further collapse and hampering rescue efforts. Preliminary findings suggest that highly flammable materials such as plastic foam, garments, and perfumes, combined with a possible electrical short circuit, may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

An official investigation into the incident has been launched, while authorities are considering relief and compensation measures for the affected families and shop owners. The Gul Plaza tragedy has once again raised critical questions about fire safety standards, emergency preparedness, and regulatory oversight in commercial buildings across urban areas.
