HEC Overhauls University Curriculum to Emphasize Practical Skills Amid Falling Enrolments

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced a major shift in Pakistan’s university education system, directing all higher education institutions to adopt skill-based curricula in response to a significant drop in student admissions.

Under the new policy, both public and private universities must integrate industry-recognized certifications into degree programmes, particularly in fields such as computer science, information technology, healthcare, construction, high-tech manufacturing, digital economy, and finance.

According to HEC officials, the policy aims to produce job-ready graduates by prioritizing practical, market-relevant skills over traditional theoretical learning. The commission believes this approach will help bridge the growing gap between academic training and industry needs.

Sources within the HEC revealed that the decision follows mounting concerns about the country’s higher education sector, where conventional degree programs have struggled to align with labour market demands. This mismatch has contributed to rising unemployment among graduates and a noticeable decline in university enrolments nationwide.

The new skill-focused framework is expected to reshape Pakistan’s higher education landscape, pushing universities to collaborate closely with industries and offer programs that better reflect evolving market trends.
