Former Pakistan opener Imran Farhat has been appointed as the national team’s batting coach for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, scheduled to begin later this month. The series will mark the start of Pakistan’s campaign in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

A Strengthened Support Staff for the New WTC Cycle

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced a reshuffled support team for the red-ball setup on Monday, confirming that Azhar Mehmood will continue as head coach, with Abdul Rehman overseeing spin bowling duties and Abdul Majeed managing fielding operations. The full backroom staff also includes a strength and conditioning coach, physiotherapist, performance analyst, and logistics personnel — signaling PCB’s intent to go all-in for the new Test season.

Imran Farhat’s appointment stands out as part of a broader strategy to reinforce Pakistan’s batting structure, which has been under the microscope following inconsistent red-ball performances in recent series.

Farhat’s Coaching Journey

Farhat, 43, represented Pakistan in 40 Tests, 58 ODIs, and 7 T20Is, amassing over 2,400 international runs before retiring in 2013. Since hanging up his boots, he has transitioned into coaching — completing PCB’s Level II and III coaching certifications — and has served in several domestic coaching roles, including positions with Balochistan and Pakistan U-19 setups.

His elevation to the senior team marks a significant step in his coaching career. Insiders believe his familiarity with Pakistan’s domestic circuit and the mental demands of Test batting could help steady the team’s top order.

> “Imran has a solid understanding of Pakistan’s batting temperament and conditions. He’s been working closely with emerging players, so this move makes complete sense,” said a PCB official familiar with the decision.
