The tanker, identified in regional reports as a key logistical asset for Russian forces, was navigating a contested shipping lane when the drone made its approach. Russian commanders scrambled a Mi-28 Havoc helicopter to intercept the incoming threat. Despite the helicopter’s speed and cannon fire, the drone pilot executed a series of evasive maneuvers, banking low against the water’s surface to break the helicopter’s targeting lock.
The strike hit the vessel’s hull, triggering a localized fire and forcing the crew to abandon ship.
