Iran Rejects U.S. Cease-Fire Deal Presented by Iraqi Leader

Tehran, July 24: Iran has rejected a U.S.-backed cease-fire proposal delivered through an Iraqi leader, dealing a setback to ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East. Iranian officials said the proposal did not provide sufficient guarantees for a lasting peace and failed to address Tehran’s key security concerns.

According to reports, the cease-fire initiative was presented through Iraqi mediation as part of broader regional efforts to halt the conflict and create an opportunity for renewed negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The proposal reportedly called for a temporary suspension of hostilities to pave the way for diplomatic talks.

Iran, however, insisted that it would not accept a short-term cease-fire unless it included firm guarantees preventing future military attacks. Iranian officials argued that a temporary truce would only delay the conflict without resolving its underlying causes. They emphasized that any agreement must ensure a permanent end to hostilities and respect Iran’s national security interests.

The United States has supported the proposal as a confidence-building measure intended to reduce violence and reopen diplomatic channels. Regional mediators, including Iraq and several Gulf countries, have continued to encourage both sides to return to negotiations in an effort to prevent a wider conflict.

The rejection of the cease-fire proposal has raised concerns about further military escalation across the Middle East. Analysts warn that continued fighting could threaten regional stability, disrupt international shipping routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, and increase volatility in global energy markets.

Despite the setback, diplomatic efforts remain ongoing. Mediators are expected to continue engaging both Washington and Tehran in hopes of reaching an agreement that addresses the security concerns of all parties and prevents the conflict from expanding further.
