Jackie, the bald eagle whose nesting habits transfixed millions of viewers worldwide, is dead. The U.S. Forest Service confirmed her passing late Tuesday, ending a decade-long reign as the most famous resident of the San Bernardino National Forest. She was approximately 16 years old.

For years, the Big Bear eagle cam offered an unfiltered, high-definition window into the lives of Jackie and her mate, Shadow. Bird enthusiasts from Tokyo to Toronto tuned in daily, watching the pair navigate the brutal realities of high-altitude parenting. They weathered historic blizzards, fended off opportunistic predators, and endured the heartbreaking loss of multiple clutches of eggs.

The obsession wasn’t just about the birds; it was about the resilience they projected. When Jackie stood over her nest during a February storm, buried under feet of snow, she became an accidental symbol of endurance. Viewers didn’t just watch her; they rooted for her.

“She was more than a bird to this community,” said a local wildlife biologist familiar with the nest site. “People felt a genuine stake in her success. When she brought food to the nest, thousands of people breathed a sigh of relief. When she lost a clutch, thousands mourned with her.”

Her death leaves a massive void in the Big Bear ecosystem. While Shadow remains in the territory, the dynamics of the nest are now uncertain. Bald eagles are fiercely territorial, and the loss of a breeding female often triggers intense competition from younger birds looking to claim the prime real estate overlooking Big Bear Lake.

The Forest Service has shuttered the cam for now, citing the need to respect the transition of the territory. They haven’t released a specific cause of death, pending a necropsy, but officials noted she had shown signs of declining health in recent months.

The livestream that turned a wild raptor into a global celebrity is dark. For the millions who spent their mornings tracking her every move, the silence from the nest is the final, difficult chapter in a story that proved just how deeply humans can connect with the wild—even through a screen.
