Frank Caprio, the longtime Chief Judge of Providence Municipal Court and the warm-hearted star of the hit reality series Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, his family confirmed.
He died peacefully on Wednesday, August 20.
“Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully at the age of 88 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer,” his family said in a statement on Facebook. “In his honour, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world – just as he did every day.”
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered flags at all state buildings to be flown at half-mast until Caprio’s burial. “Judge Caprio was a Rhode Island treasure,” the governor said. “On a personal level, he was a friend who faced his illness with bravery, and I will miss him dearly. He showed us all what justice with humanity can look like.”
A Judge Known Worldwide
Caprio became globally recognised through Caught in Providence, the long-running courtroom reality show that showcased his compassionate and often humorous approach to minor traffic violations. With empathy and wit, he turned his courtroom into a place of understanding, earning millions of fans around the world.
The programme aired locally for more than two decades before reaching national television. Later, clips of his rulings gained massive popularity on YouTube, where new audiences continued to discover his unique style of justice.
“I don’t wear a badge under my robe,” Caprio once said. “I wear a heart.”
Earlier this year, he published his memoir, Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge, reflecting on the stories that shaped his life and career.
His Illness and Final Months
In December 2023, Caprio revealed that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He praised the doctors treating him in Boston and Providence but admitted he was facing “an insidious form of cancer.”
Throughout his treatment, he stayed connected with his 1.7 million Instagram followers, sharing updates and even posting videos from chemotherapy sessions. In one video, he listened to singer-songwriter Jewel, who later said she was honoured to bring him comfort.
Judge Frank Caprio will be remembered not only in Rhode Island but across the globe as a man who brought kindness, humour, and compassion into the courtroom — showing the world that justice could also have a heart.
