ISLAMABAD — Violence linked to terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations surged dramatically in July 2026, marking the deadliest month of the year with a total of 205 fatalities—including 112 security personnel—while 401 terrorists were eliminated, according to a monthly security assessment by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS). The report highlights that fatalities among security forces reached their highest monthly toll since January 2023, driven by a sharp escalation in militant violence and intensified counter-terrorism operations. The death toll also included 74 civilians and 19 members of peace committees, the latter representing the highest monthly figure recorded in a decade.

The data revealed alarming spikes across key metrics, including eight suicide attacks—five of which were vehicle-borne—and a 100 percent increase in kidnapping incidents, which rose from 33 in June to 66 in July. Provincially, the security situation deteriorated most severely in Balochistan, where total casualties jumped by 241 percent to 372, while mainland Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded a 105 percent increase in deaths. Conversely, regions like Punjab, Islamabad, AJK, and Gilgit-Baltistan remained free of terrorist violence during the month. Overall, the first seven months of 2026 have witnessed 2,786 deaths linked to terrorism and counter-terrorism operations nationwide.
