KARACHI – A police constable was seriously injured after armed robbers opened fire during a motorcycle snatching attempt in Manzoor Colony, within the jurisdiction of Baloch Colony Police Station, on Thursday morning.
According to police, the victim was identified as 38-year-old Constable Zaheer Abbas, son of Muhammad Naseeb, who is posted at Darakhshan Police Station. He was on his way to court from his residence when three armed men on two motorcycles intercepted him and attempted to snatch his newly purchased bike. Upon resistance, the suspects opened fire, hitting him near the shoulder.
The injured officer was rushed to Jinnah Hospital by a Chhipa ambulance and is said to be out of danger. Police confirmed that the suspects also took away the officer’s personal pistol but abandoned the motorcycle before fleeing after neighbors raised alarm.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing the constable collapse, while the assailants panicked and fled. CCTV footage of the incident shows the suspects abandoning the bike in haste, with their faces clearly visible.
Baloch Colony SHO Mazhar Kango said Abbas was wearing a plain shirt over his uniform at the time, which may have led the suspects to assume he was a civilian. He further revealed that the officer had purchased the motorcycle just two weeks earlier.
Local residents complained that street crimes in the area have become routine, with multiple robberies reported in recent months. Police have launched an investigation and are analyzing CCTV footage to track down the culprits.
