With the onset of winter in Karachi, the number of patients suffering from heart diseases has increased.
Director of Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Dr Javed Akbar Sial said that the load of heart patients has risen in both government and private hospitals.
He said that NICVD and SICVD have recorded a 30 to 40 percent increase in patients, and cases of heart attacks and angina have gone up during the cold season.
Dr Javed Akbar Sial stated that during winter, heart patients become more prone to infections, and respiratory diseases have a severe impact on the heart. In cold weather, the constriction of blood vessels increases pressure on the heart.
He added that respiratory infections in winter are dangerous for heart patients, and they should protect themselves from the cold. It is extremely important to keep blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol under control.
He said that in case of flu, cough, fever, or chest pain, patients should immediately visit the nearest hospital.
