Karachi’s digital surveillance network has turned its lens on the police department itself. Safe City cameras identified a station house officer (SHO) operating a private vehicle equipped with a fake license plate, triggering an internal inquiry that has embarrassed the city’s top brass.
The officer, currently posted at a key district station, was flagged by the automated system while navigating a high-traffic corridor. The software cross-referenced the plate number against the provincial excise database and returned a mismatch. The registration details belonged to a different vehicle entirely, marking a clear violation of traffic laws the officer is sworn to enforce.
This incident strikes a nerve in a city where citizens are routinely fined or detained for minor registration discrepancies. For many Karachiites, the sight of a law enforcement official bypassing the rules they demand others follow is a familiar grievance. It fuels a persistent narrative that the police operate under a separate set of standards.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) officials confirmed the investigation late Tuesday. They are currently reviewing footage from multiple vantage points to verify the duration of the violation and determine whether the officer intended to conceal the vehicle’s identity for unauthorized movement.
“The law applies to everyone equally, starting with those who wear the uniform,” a police spokesperson said. He declined to name the officer publicly, citing the ongoing nature of the departmental probe.
While the officer faces potential suspension, the case highlights the growing reach of the Safe City project. Originally designed to curb street crime and monitor militant activity, the system is increasingly being used to enforce administrative discipline within the ranks.
The officer has been issued a show-cause notice. Beyond the immediate disciplinary action, the incident serves as a stark reminder that in an era of constant digital monitoring, even those behind the badge are no longer shielded from the camera’s gaze.
