Headline: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Launch ‘Pride of KP’ Awards 2026
PESHAWAR — The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is set to launch the inaugural ‘Pride of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Awards 2026,’ a new state-level initiative aimed at recognizing excellence across diverse professional and cultural fields.
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s office confirmed the move this week, signaling a shift toward formalizing how the province honors its citizens. While provincial honors have existed in various fragmented forms before, this program aims to create a unified, high-profile recognition platform for those contributing to the province’s development.
The administration is currently finalizing the nomination criteria. Sources within the provincial secretariat suggest the awards will span sectors ranging from public service and education to sports and the arts. The goal is to move beyond political appointments and establish a merit-based selection process involving independent committees.
Critics have often pointed to the lack of consistent provincial recognition for local talent in KP, arguing that many high achievers are forced to seek national-level awards in Islamabad to gain proper visibility. This initiative appears to be the government’s attempt to reverse that trend — keeping the spotlight firmly on local soil.
“We want our people to feel that their home province is the first to see their value,” a senior official in the Chief Minister’s secretariat said, speaking on condition of anonymity. He added that the government intends to make these awards a permanent fixture on the provincial calendar, with the inaugural ceremony slated for early 2026.
Budgetary allocations for the awards are expected to be unveiled in the upcoming fiscal review. While the move has been welcomed by local cultural bodies, the real test will be the transparency of the jury selection. If the process is perceived as a vehicle for rewarding political loyalists rather than genuine trailblazers, the initiative risks losing its credibility before the first trophy is even handed out.
For now, the government is playing its cards close to the chest. With the nomination portal expected to open late next year, the administration has until then to prove that ‘Pride of KP’ is more than just a public relations exercise.
