PESHAWAR — The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has formally notified the establishment of the “Paigham-e-Aman” committee, a provincial-level body tasked with curbing rising militancy and fostering inter-communal harmony.

The move follows a surge in security incidents across the province, particularly in the southern districts and the newly merged tribal regions. Officials within the Chief Minister’s House confirmed the committee will operate as an advisory and outreach platform, bringing together religious scholars, tribal elders, and civil society representatives to de-escalate local tensions.

The primary mandate focuses on conflict resolution. By engaging local influencers, the government hopes to counter extremist narratives that have gained traction in recent months. Security analysts, however, remain cautious. While the initiative signals a shift toward a political and social approach, the effectiveness of such committees often hinges on their autonomy from the provincial bureaucracy.

“This isn’t just about dialogue,” a senior provincial official said on condition of anonymity. “It’s about creating a buffer between the state’s security apparatus and the local population to prevent the radicalization of youth.”

The committee is expected to hold its inaugural session in Peshawar next week. Its first agenda item involves mapping sensitive zones where local grievances have historically been exploited by militant factions.

Critics point to the failure of similar past initiatives, which often dissolved into photo-ops without addressing the underlying economic and political grievances driving the violence. The provincial government faces a significant challenge: proving this committee can deliver tangible security outcomes rather than serving as a symbolic gesture.

With the security landscape in KP remaining volatile, the success of the Paigham-e-Aman committee will be measured by its ability to secure genuine buy-in from the very communities it aims to protect. For now, the administration has committed to a monthly review of the committee’s progress, setting a high bar for a provincial body that has yet to hold its first meeting.
