Lahore: The air in the city of Lahore has shown signs of improvement this year, according to data and government-announced initiatives, though experts warn the battle is far from won.
In recent months the city has recorded levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) that are lower than last year’s peak. For instance, real-time monitoring sources show typical AQI values around 190-300 still unhealthy, but noticeably better than the extreme highs of previous seasons.
The provincial government of Punjab rolled out a comprehensive “Smog-Less Punjab” roadmap which targets key pollution sources: vehicle emissions, crop residue burning, construction dust and industrial emissions.
Key measures have included stricter vehicle emissions controls, the introduction of clean-air standards under the “Clean Air Policy”, and actions to limit stubble burning from farms.
