At least 18 people have been killed and several others are reported missing after torrential rains triggered cloudbursts and landslides across the northern Indian states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

According to officials, Uttarakhand bore the worst damage, where a series of cloudbursts led to flash floods and landslides, leaving 15 people dead and 16 still missing. Rescue teams say more than 900 people remain stranded as swollen rivers swept away bridges, roads, and houses. Dehradun district was among the hardest hit, with floodwaters inundating shops, streets, and residential areas.

In Himachal Pradesh, three people — including two women and a child — died after their home collapsed in Mandi district. Local reports confirm that several vehicles were washed away while communication lines and transport services were badly disrupted.

Authorities have launched massive search and rescue operations, with disaster response teams deployed in the worst-hit regions. However, heavy rainfall continues to pose challenges. Meteorological officials have warned of more downpours in the coming days, urging residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert.

Just last month, another cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Dharali village caused similar destruction, claiming multiple lives and leaving dozens missing.
