North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has made his first visit to China in more than a year, travelling to the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday to strengthen ties between the two neighbouring countries.

According to Chinese state media, Kim crossed the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge, which connects North Korea with China. The visit came as both countries seek to expand economic cooperation and reinforce their longstanding political relationship.

During the visit, Kim met Wang Huning, a senior Chinese Communist Party official and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. The two officials visited a memorial honouring Chinese soldiers who fought alongside North Korean forces during the 1950–1953 Korean War.

Kim expressed gratitude for China’s historical support and voiced his country’s willingness to strengthen friendship and expand practical cooperation with Beijing.

He also visited a vehicle factory in Dandong before returning to North Korea across the newly opened bridge. His visit was accompanied by senior North Korean officials, including his sister, Kim Yo Jong, and Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui.

The trip took place ahead of the anniversary of China’s entry into the Korean War, which is observed on October 25. The visit highlighted the historical ties between the two countries and their efforts to deepen cooperation.

The opening of the New Yalu River Bridge is expected to facilitate cross-border trade, including the movement of heavy vehicles and commercial goods. The infrastructure project could further strengthen economic links between the two countries.

China remains North Korea’s most important economic partner and a key diplomatic ally. Kim’s latest visit also comes as Pyongyang continues to strengthen its relations with Russia.

Kim last visited China in September 2025, when he attended events marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and met Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The latest visit underscores efforts by Pyongyang and Beijing to maintain close relations and expand cooperation in trade and other sectors amid changing regional and international dynamics.
