HULL: Manchester United endured a miserable start to their Premier League campaign on Saturday, suffering a surprise 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium.
Michael Carrick’s side fell behind in the first half after goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, with United unable to recover despite introducing Marcus Rashford after the break.
Hull, back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, produced an impressive performance despite missing 10 players through injury. Their energetic display exposed United’s weaknesses at both ends of the pitch.
United had begun the match positively, with Bryan Mbeumo testing Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis after connecting with Luke Shaw’s cross. Matheus Cunha also came close, but his low effort was saved by the debutant goalkeeper.
Hull soon began creating opportunities of their own. Oli McBurnie forced a save from Senne Lammens with a header before the hosts took the lead in the 17th minute.
A poorly defended corner fell to Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi, who finished from close range after McBurnie’s initial effort had been blocked.
United struggled to respond, with Patrick Dorgu missing a chance to equalise after receiving a pass from Harry Maguire.
Hull doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when Regan Slater’s free-kick was poorly dealt with by the United defence, allowing Senegal defender Nobel Mendy to head the ball beyond Lammens.
Carrick introduced Rashford at half-time in an attempt to change the game, but the England forward was unable to provide the spark United needed.
Hull continued to look more dangerous, with Mohamed Belloumi sending a long-range effort narrowly wide. United also made changes in midfield, removing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but the visitors failed to find a way back into the contest.
The defeat represents a major setback for Carrick, who is now under greater pressure after becoming United’s permanent manager following his successful interim spell last season.
United are expected to challenge for the Premier League title after finishing third last season, but Saturday’s performance offered little evidence that they are ready to compete with champions Arsenal.
Carrick has already called for further reinforcements, with United reportedly agreeing a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. The disappointing display at Hull is likely to increase calls for more additions before the transfer window closes.
Former England striker Alan Shearer summed up United’s performance bluntly, describing the team as lacking hunger and calling their display “shocking.”
Hull, meanwhile, secured a memorable victory and gave manager Sergej Jakirovic a strong response to those who had predicted an immediate return to the Championship.
