The long march organized by a religious party toward Islamabad was forcibly halted in Muridke on Monday following intense confrontations between protesters and law enforcement. A police officer was killed and numerous others were wounded in the violence.
According to police, demonstrators attempted to break through roadblocks, prompting authorities to respond with batons and tear gas. Protesters retaliated by hurling stones, deploying nail-studded sticks, and setting vehicles ablaze.
At least five people including one police officer, three protesters, and one bystander lost their lives, and scores of others were injured in the escalation. Police have arrested multiple individuals accused of engaging in violent acts.
Law enforcement agencies say that policing operations are ongoing along major routes leading into Islamabad to prevent any further advances. Meanwhile, authorities have warned that those involved in violence or damage to public property may face strict legal consequences.
