The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a fresh weather advisory today, warning of widespread heavy rainfall across Sindh that threatens to trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas.

A strong monsoon current is expected to penetrate the province starting Thursday, bringing heavy, intermittent downpours to Karachi, Hyderabad, and Mirpurkhas. The Met Office anticipates the system will persist through Sunday, with the most intense activity concentrated in the coastal belt.

Emergency responders are already on alert. Karachi’s municipal authorities face significant pressure, as the city’s drainage infrastructure remains a recurring point of failure during monsoon peaks. Previous heavy spells have left major thoroughfares submerged, trapping commuters and crippling power grids for hours.

Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz told local media that this system carries a high moisture content. He cautioned that while the rains are necessary to break the current heatwave, the intensity could overwhelm existing storm drains.

Residents in low-lying neighborhoods—particularly those historically prone to water accumulation—should prepare for potential property damage. The provincial disaster management authority has directed district administrations to position suction pumps and heavy machinery in “hotspot” zones before the first clouds roll in.

Beyond the immediate flood risk, the agricultural sector remains in a state of uncertainty. While the rains may help recharge parched soil in the interior, excessive water in the cotton-growing districts could result in crop damage if the drainage systems fail to move the water quickly.

The PMD’s forecast remains firm: expect the sky to darken by Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest rainfall likely occurring during the Friday night window. If the current models hold, this weekend could be the wettest of the season for the province.
