At least 27 people have lost their lives and several others remain missing after torrential rains unleashed catastrophic flooding across parts of Mexico, triggering landslides and washing away homes, bridges, and vehicles.
The relentless downpour, which began late Thursday and continued into Friday, caused rivers to overflow in several eastern states. Hidalgo was hit hardest, with 16 confirmed deaths as surging water swept through towns, ripping apart roads and cutting electricity supplies.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the government has mobilized more than 5,400 personnel to support rescue efforts, reopen key routes, and deliver emergency aid. “We are working to support the population, open roads, and restore electrical service,” she said on social media.
In Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta confirmed at least nine fatalities and reported five people missing, while state officials estimated around 80,000 residents had been affected by the extreme weather. Veracruz also reported two deaths as flooding engulfed coastal towns.
The Mexican Navy deployed 3,300 troops to assist with evacuations and help clear debris in the worst-hit zones.
“No one was prepared for this,” said José Cervantes, who owns a small coffee shop in Poza Rica, one of the affected towns. “The water reached nearly one and a half meters. Everything was underwater the dining room, kitchen, even the private area.”
Drone footage and social media videos show streets turned into rivers, cars piled up by fast-moving water, and residents wading through thick mud in search of safety.
