Migraines are more than just severe headaches. They are a neurological condition that can cause throbbing pain, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light, sound or smells. Some people may also experience warning signs, known as aura, before a migraine attack begins. While there is no permanent cure, a combination of medical treatments and simple home remedies can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Medical Treatments for Migraine

Migraine treatment generally falls into two categories: medications used during an attack and treatments aimed at preventing future episodes.

1. Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

For mild to moderate migraines, medicines such as ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen or acetaminophen may provide relief. These medications work best when taken early in the headache phase. However, overuse can lead to medication-overuse headaches, so they should not be taken too frequently.

2. Prescription Medications

People with moderate to severe migraines may need prescription medicines, including:

  • Triptans (such as sumatriptan and rizatriptan), which specifically target migraine pathways in the brain.
  • Gepants and CGRP inhibitors, newer medicines that help reduce migraine pain and frequency.
  • Anti-nausea medications, which can help control vomiting and improve comfort during attacks.

3. Preventive Treatments

For frequent migraines, doctors may recommend preventive options such as:

  • Beta blockers
  • Certain antidepressants
  • Anti-seizure medicines
  • Botox injections
  • CGRP monoclonal antibodies

These treatments aim to reduce the number and severity of migraine attacks over time.

At-Home Relief Methods

Simple self-care measures can often help shorten or ease a migraine attack.

Rest in a Quiet, Dark Room

Light and noise can worsen migraine symptoms. Resting in a calm, dark environment may help reduce discomfort.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is a common migraine trigger. Drinking water regularly can help prevent and ease headaches.

Use a Cold Compress

Applying a cool cloth or ice pack wrapped in a towel to the forehead may provide temporary pain relief.

Follow Regular Sleep and Meal Schedules

Skipping meals, poor sleep and irregular routines can trigger migraines. Maintaining consistent habits may reduce attacks.

Manage Stress

Stress is a major migraine trigger. Relaxation techniques, deep breathing, yoga, meditation and biofeedback may help reduce both stress and migraine frequency.

Identify Triggers

Keeping a migraine diary can help identify triggers such as certain foods, dehydration, hormonal changes, strong smells or bright lights. Avoiding known triggers may prevent future attacks.

When to Seek Medical Help

People should consult a doctor if migraines become more frequent, last longer than usual or do not improve with home care and medication. Immediate medical attention is needed for sudden severe headaches, weakness, confusion, speech problems or vision loss.

Although migraines can be challenging, a personalised treatment plan that combines medication, healthy habits and home remedies can help many people manage symptoms more effectively and reduce the impact of attacks on daily life.
