Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has dismissed mounting speculation over the government’s longevity, declaring that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will remain in office for the full five-year term.

The statement, delivered during a press briefing in Islamabad, serves as a direct rebuttal to opposition claims that the current administration is on shaky ground. Naqvi’s message was blunt: there is no internal or external pressure capable of cutting the tenure short.

Political instability has been a recurring theme since the February general elections. Opposition leaders, primarily from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have consistently labeled the current setup a “mandate thief” administration, predicting an early collapse under the weight of economic crises and public discontent.

Naqvi brushed off these predictions as political theater. He argued that the current coalition has the numbers and the mandate to steer the country through its ongoing financial recovery.

Yet, the timing of his comments is telling. Economic indicators remain fragile. Inflation, while showing signs of cooling, continues to squeeze household budgets, and the government’s reliance on international bailouts remains a point of contention for critics.

When asked about the potential for mid-term elections—a demand frequently voiced by PTI leadership—Naqvi didn’t mince words. He characterized such demands as distractions from a party struggling to adapt to its role in the opposition. He insisted that the cabinet is focused on policy execution, not political maneuvering.

Despite the minister’s confidence, the government’s path forward is anything but smooth. The coalition faces a complex challenge: balancing the harsh conditions of IMF loan programs against the need for public relief. Failure on either front could quickly shift the political narrative, regardless of what the Interior Minister says today.

For now, the government is betting that stability will eventually yield results. Whether the public—and the political opposition—will give them the time they claim to have remains the ultimate question.
