The Council of Europe has announced that Irene Kitsou-Milonas of Greece has officially taken charge as the Special Representative of the Secretary General on antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred, and all forms of religious intolerance. She assumed her responsibilities on December 1:
Secretary General Alain Berset welcomed her appointment, stating that rising antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred from the Middle East to Europe pose a threat to democracy and social harmony. He stressed that addressing religious intolerance remains a key priority of the 46-member Council of Europe, which is dedicated to protecting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
Berset added that combating hatred is central to preserving the peace project envisioned by the Council of Europe’s founders after World War II. Kitsou-Milonas, in her remarks, pledged to develop strong policies and effective strategies to counter growing intolerance across the continent.
She highlighted her commitment to strengthening cooperation with national and international partners, promoting dialogue among religious leaders, and preserving Holocaust memory. These efforts, she said, are essential for fostering peaceful coexistence under the Council of Europe’s vision for a New Democratic Pact for Europe.
