Scientists in China have identified a new tick-borne virus capable of causing a flu-like illness, adding to growing scientific concern over emerging infections transmitted by ticks. The newly identified virus has been associated with fever, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms and abnormal laboratory findings.

Researchers identified the virus after studying patients who had a history of tick exposure. The findings indicate that the infection can produce symptoms resembling other febrile illnesses, making laboratory testing and proper diagnosis important.

Patients infected with the virus experienced symptoms including fever, tiredness and gastrointestinal problems. Some also showed abnormal blood and liver-related laboratory results, indicating that the infection can affect multiple parts of the body.

The virus belongs to the orthonairovirus group. Researchers’ findings are significant because tick-borne viruses can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from other infections based solely on symptoms.

Scientists are continuing to investigate the virus, including its transmission patterns, clinical severity and potential risks to people exposed to ticks. Some patients were also found to have infections involving other tick-borne pathogens, highlighting the possibility of co-infections.

The discovery highlights the importance of tick surveillance and disease monitoring, particularly in regions where tick populations are common. Researchers say further studies will be needed to determine how widely the virus is circulating and how frequently it causes human disease.

For the public, avoiding tick bites remains an important preventive measure. Protective clothing, tick repellents and careful inspection of the body after spending time in areas where ticks are present can help reduce exposure.

The discovery also demonstrates why continued monitoring of emerging infectious diseases is important, as previously unidentified pathogens can sometimes cause illnesses that initially resemble common infections.
