Southern Punjab remains in the grip of severe flooding as overflowing rivers Chenab and Sutlej have displaced more than 200,000 people, prompting large-scale evacuation and relief operations across multiple districts.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Muzaffargarh, Multan, Shujabad, Jalalpur Pirwala, Uch Sharif, and Alipur are among the hardest-hit areas. In Muzaffargarh alone, 135,000 people across 138 villages have been affected, while another 50,000 residents in Rangpur tehsil are facing inundation.
Authorities confirmed that 235,296 people and over 180,000 livestock have been shifted to safer ground from Jalalpur Pirwala and surrounding villages. Rescue teams remain on high alert as water levels continue to put pressure on embankments, with contingency plans prepared in case the Shershah bund crosses the danger level of 393.50 feet.
PDMA officials said the ongoing monsoon spell has largely subsided, though the possibility of another surge cannot be ruled out. While water levels in Sutlej and Chenab are gradually receding, downstream pressure at Trimmu and Guddu barrages remains critical.
Elsewhere, Karachi reported three deaths — two teenagers from electrocution and one from a roof collapse — during heavy rains, while Tharparkar and Dadu saw widespread damage to mud houses after days of showers.
On the relief front, the United Nations has pledged $5 million through its Central Emergency Response Fund to support flood-hit communities. Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari directed the Ministry of National Food Security to ensure uninterrupted food supply in the affected districts.
