The government cut petrol prices by Rs 8.50 per liter effective today, bringing the cost down to Rs 269.80. This marks the second consecutive reduction in fuel costs, offering a rare reprieve for households battered by months of persistent inflation.

The Finance Division confirmed the decision late Tuesday night. While the price of high-speed diesel—the primary fuel for the transport and agriculture sectors—remains unchanged at Rs 272.15, the relief at the pump for commuters and motorcycle riders is immediate.

Lower global oil prices provided the fiscal space for the move. International benchmarks softened over the last fortnight, allowing the government to pass on some of the benefit to the local market. It’s a shift from the frequent upward revisions that defined the previous quarter.

For the average Pakistani, the math is simple. A standard tank fill-up for a motorcycle now costs roughly Rs 150 less than it did yesterday. While critics argue the reduction is marginal compared to the massive tax hikes implemented in the recent budget, the psychological impact on the streets is palpable.

“It’s a small help, but it’s help nonetheless,” said Aslam Khan, a ride-hailing driver in Islamabad. “Every rupee counts when you’re paying for rent and school fees on top of fuel.”

Independent analysts warn that this relief may be temporary. Volatility in the Middle East continues to shadow global supply chains, and the government’s reliance on petroleum levies to meet IMF-mandated revenue targets remains the primary obstacle to more significant price drops.

The new rates took effect at midnight. Gas stations across the country have already updated their digital displays, ending weeks of speculation regarding the government’s next move. For now, the focus shifts to whether this trend can hold through the end of the month.
