The Foreign Office summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires to Islamabad on Tuesday, lodging a formal protest against recent remarks made by an American diplomat regarding the status of Kashmir.

The diplomatic tension stems from comments made by a US official during a recent visit to Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Islamabad views the remarks as an infringement on its sovereignty and a departure from the established diplomatic stance on the disputed territory.

“The comments are uncalled for and ignore the ground realities of the region,” a senior Foreign Office official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We have made our position clear: Kashmir remains a disputed territory, and the international community must respect that standing.”

For Pakistan, the issue is a core pillar of its foreign policy. Any suggestion that implies a shift in the status quo triggers an immediate, reflexive response from the civilian and military leadership. While the US maintains that its policy on Kashmir has not changed, the optics of a senior diplomat making public statements in the region have clearly rankled officials in Islamabad.

The US embassy in Islamabad has remained tight-lipped following the meeting. When asked for comment, a spokesperson said the US continues to encourage dialogue between Pakistan and India, but declined to address the specifics of the protest or the diplomat’s original comments.

This incident arrives at a fragile time for US-Pakistan relations. With Pakistan navigating a complex economic recovery and seeking to stabilize its regional influence, the government is sensitive to any perceived slight from Washington. By summoning the Chargé d’Affaires, the Foreign Office is signaling to both domestic critics and international observers that it will not tolerate what it deems interference in its internal affairs.

The diplomatic spat is unlikely to derail broader bilateral cooperation, but it underscores the persistent friction surrounding the Kashmir issue. As both sides return to private channels, the message from Islamabad is firm: diplomatic visits to the region carry political weight, and the US should tread carefully.
