Pakistan will distribute 700,000 Google Chromebooks to students across the country under the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme to promote digital learning and expand access to modern educational tools, programme chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan announced on Friday.
Speaking at an event, Mashhood said the initiative is designed to strengthen technology-driven education and help students meet both national and global challenges. The Chromebooks will be provided to students enrolled in schools, colleges, and universities nationwide.
He said the devices will enable learners to access online educational platforms, updated academic resources, and software supporting research and creative learning. Distribution will be carried out in phases to ensure transparency and fair allocation based on institutional readiness and needs.
Mashhood added that a national monitoring system will be introduced to track usage and learning outcomes, ensuring effective use of the devices in classrooms as well as for remote learning.
The chairman said the programme will help bridge the digital divide, particularly between urban and rural areas, and confirmed that students from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan will also benefit.
He concluded that the Chromebook Programme reflects the government’s long-term commitment to modernising education, empowering youth, and building a digitally skilled future workforce for Pakistan.
