In a groundbreaking achievement for Pakistan and the global mining sector, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) has been awarded the prestigious Gold Certification by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) — making it the first mining company in the world to attain this standard.
The certification recognizes SECMC’s sustainable and effective water management practices in the Thar coal region, a key site in Pakistan’s energy and resource landscape. The AWS Gold Certification is an internationally recognized benchmark for responsible water use that ensures social, environmental, and economic benefits for surrounding communities.
This milestone reflects the positive impact of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), whose pro-business policies and targeted facilitation have helped unlock the potential of Pakistan’s mining and natural resource sectors.
“This global recognition is a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible resource utilization,” said a spokesperson for SECMC. “We are proud to set a new global standard from Thar, and this is just the beginning.”
The achievement marks a major leap forward not just for SECMC, but for Pakistan’s growing presence on the international sustainability and mining map.
