“In war, truth is the first casualty,” said Aeschylus, and in today’s media landscape, those words ring louder than ever. Over the past few days, India’s mainstream media has faced criticism for amplifying unverified claims and sensationalism amid escalating regional tensions.

Instead of relying on facts and responsible journalism, several prime-time broadcasts have leaned toward aggressive nationalism, fueling public hysteria. Social media trolls and armchair experts have further exacerbated the situation, turning platforms into echo chambers of misinformation.

While state-driven propaganda is nothing new, the modern information age makes it increasingly difficult to suppress facts. Yet, in a striking display of disregard for credibility, some Indian outlets reported outlandish claims — including the false assertion that the Indian Navy destroyed the Karachi Port on Thursday night.

Eyewitnesses and journalists on the ground in Karachi dismissed the report entirely, noting life continued normally. “We were having seafood just a few feet away from the so-called ‘destroyed’ port,” one local resident remarked.

As geopolitical tensions evolve, the role of media becomes ever more critical — not in inciting conflict, but in seeking the truth.
