Police fired tear gas canisters and used batons to break up a demonstration by hundreds of job seekers in northern India early Wednesday. The protesters, who had gathered outside a government recruitment office, were demanding transparency in the delayed results of recent civil service examinations.

The unrest began at dawn. Frustrated by months of silence from recruitment boards, the protesters blocked a major arterial road, effectively paralyzing traffic for several kilometers. Within an hour, local police arrived in riot gear, issuing a warning before firing multiple rounds of tear gas into the crowd.

“We have been waiting for these results for over a year,” said 24-year-old Ravi Kumar, one of the protesters who escaped the initial police sweep. “They keep telling us to wait, but our lives are on hold while these positions remain vacant.”

The scene turned chaotic as protesters scrambled to clear the area, with many retreating into nearby narrow alleyways. Local authorities confirmed that at least 15 people were detained, though no serious injuries were reported by the hospital nearby.

Government spokespeople have defended the police action, citing the need to maintain public order and prevent the disruption of essential services. They claim the recruitment process is currently undergoing a “technical audit” to ensure fairness, though they refused to provide a specific date for when the final results would be published.

Critics argue that the heavy-handed response signals a deepening disconnect between the administration and the nation’s youth. With unemployment rates hovering near historic highs, civil service jobs remain the most sought-after career path for millions of young graduates.

For many of those gathered today, the protest was never just about a test score. It was a reaction to the shrinking pool of stable, government-backed employment. As the smoke cleared and the road reopened by mid-afternoon, the protesters dispersed into the city, but the underlying frustration remains. The government has yet to announce any formal talks with the organizers, leaving the status of the recruitment process exactly where it was yesterday: in limbo.
