Pope Leo XIV visited Istanbul’s historic Blue Mosque on Saturday as part of his multi-day trip to Turkey, emphasizing the importance of unity among Christian communities. His visit marks the second day of his official tour.
The pope’s stop at the mosque follows the tradition of his recent predecessors, who also made symbolic visits to the landmark as a gesture of respect to Turkey’s Muslim majority. Despite receiving an invitation from an imam, Pope Leo XIV chose not to pray inside the mosque.
Earlier in the day, Pope Leo XIV and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I participated in a doxology service at the Patriarchal Church of Saint George in Istanbul. Their joint appearance highlighted continued efforts to strengthen ties between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.
Later, the pope celebrated Mass in Istanbul, using the occasion to reaffirm his message of peace and unity among Christians worldwide. His visit continues to draw international attention as religious leaders work toward greater cooperation.
