Western Disturbance and Low Pressure System Trigger Widespread Storm Activity Nationwide
A significant pre-monsoon weather system is currently affecting large parts of Pakistan from May 12 to May 17, 2026, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and isolated hailstorms across multiple regions, according to meteorological conditions linked to a western disturbance and an induced surface low-pressure area.
Meteorological patterns indicate that moist air is continuously flowing into the country from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, strengthening storm development across northern and central regions.
Experts say the combination of moisture inflow, upper-level atmospheric instability, and orographic lifting over mountainous terrain is driving the intensity of the system.
Punjab, KP, GB and AJK Among Most Affected Regions
The weather system is impacting a wide geographical area, including:
- Punjab
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
- Northern Balochistan
- Gilgit-Baltistan
- Azad Jammu & Kashmir
These regions are experiencing intermittent spells of heavy rainfall, thunderstorm activity, gusty winds, and in some areas, hailstorms.
Urban and low-lying areas in particular may face temporary water accumulation due to intense downpours.
Peak Activity Expected Between May 13–15
Meteorological analysis suggests the system will reach its peak intensity between May 13 and May 15, when moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in several parts of the country.
During this phase, weather experts warn of:
- Strong windstorms
- Heavy rainfall spells
- Lightning activity
- Localized flash flooding in vulnerable areas
- Possible disruption to transport and power supply
Authorities may need to remain on alert in regions prone to flooding, especially near rivers, streams, and urban drainage systems.
System to Weaken by May 17
Weather models indicate that the system will gradually lose intensity after May 15 and begin shifting northeastward, exiting most parts of Pakistan by May 17, 2026.
However, residual moisture may still produce isolated showers in upper regions before conditions stabilize.
Authorities Advise Caution
Meteorological departments are advising citizens to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall
- Stay away from weak structures during windstorms
- Take precautions in flood-prone areas
- Follow official weather updates regularly
Officials are continuing to monitor the system closely as conditions may evolve rapidly during the peak phase.
