Severe Heatwave Grips India and Pakistan as Temperatures Soar Above 48°C

A powerful and persistent heatwave is currently affecting large parts of India and Pakistan, pushing temperatures to dangerous levels and breaking daily weather records across several regions. The extreme conditions are being felt most intensely in northwestern India, but meteorologists warn that the impact is also extending into eastern Pakistan due to shifting regional weather patterns.

In India’s western state of Rajasthan, the town of Barmer recorded an extreme temperature of 48.3°C (118.9°F). Other nearby areas also experienced severe daytime heat, with temperatures reaching close to 47°C, while nighttime temperatures remained unusually high at around 34°C, offering almost no relief from the prolonged heat stress.

Weather experts say the heatwave is not confined by borders, as the same hot and dry air mass is influencing eastern parts of Pakistan. Rising temperatures and strong, dry winds are worsening already harsh conditions, particularly in border-adjacent regions such as Sindh and southern Punjab, where heat levels are climbing above seasonal averages.

Meteorologists explain that the ongoing situation is being driven by a strong and persistent high-pressure system over the region. This system is suppressing cloud formation and significantly reducing the chances of rainfall, allowing heat to build up and intensify across both countries.

Authorities are warning that continued exposure to such extreme temperatures may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, dehydration, and water shortages. Vulnerable populations in urban centers and rural areas—especially those without reliable access to cooling systems—are considered at higher risk.

Health officials in both countries have advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, stay well hydrated, wear light and protective clothing, and reduce outdoor physical activity. Special attention is being urged for children, elderly individuals, and outdoor workers, as hospitals are already reporting rising cases of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Meteorological forecasts suggest that the heatwave may continue for several more days, with little immediate relief expected. Experts warn that temperatures could remain dangerously high until a major change in atmospheric conditions occurs. They also note that such extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and intense in South Asia, highlighting growing concerns about long-term climate change impacts in the region.
