Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has publicly taken notice of the status of a major infrastructure project just days after his administration issued a formal order to scrap it. The sudden shift in tone suggests a breakdown in communication between the Prime Minister’s Office and the planning ministry, leaving stakeholders in a state of confusion.

The project, which had been slated for cancellation due to “fiscal constraints,” was suddenly thrust back into the spotlight Tuesday. The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement demanding a report on the decision-making process, effectively stalling the liquidation of assets that had already begun.

For those involved, the whiplash is real. Contractors were notified of the cancellation last Thursday. By Monday, they were told to hold off on dismantling equipment.

The reversal highlights a recurring friction within the current government: the struggle to balance austerity measures with the political necessity of completing high-profile development works. While the finance ministry has pushed for spending cuts to meet IMF benchmarks, the political leadership remains wary of the optics surrounding abandoned construction sites and stalled public services.

Sources close to the Cabinet Division suggest the initial cancellation order bypassed the Prime Minister’s direct approval. It appears the directive was issued at the bureaucratic level, intended to trim the federal budget before the upcoming quarterly review.

The Prime Minister’s intervention changes the math entirely. If the project is revived, the government will need to find fresh funding sources, likely diverting capital from other operational budgets.

“We are working in the dark,” said one project lead, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “One day we are packing up, the next we are being asked for a status report on why we haven’t finished the work.”

The government has until Friday to submit a comprehensive brief on the financial viability of the project. Until then, the site remains in a state of limbo—neither closed, nor active. The final decision rests on whether the administration can justify the cost against the looming threat of further economic tightening.
